WHAT IS A HOME TOUR?

Home tours are organized events that allow ticket-holders the opportunity to tour private homes not normally open to the public during specific dates & times.  These tours allow people the chance to experience different homes’ unique characteristics, layout and design.  Often fundraisers, these events are typically put on by neighborhood associations, historic preservation societies, cultural arts associations, and civic societies.  These tours offer an authentic way to truly experience a city, town or neighborhood.

NECESSITY IS THE MOTHER OF INVENTION

Here’s a challenge, open up Google and type in home tour near me, or house tour near me….or any other variation you can come up with. Did Google return anything useful? Yeah, it didn’t for me either! Hence the creation of this website!

ABOUT ME

I am a shameless lover of home tours….ESPECIALLY historic homes! There’s something about a historic home…..a place where so many others before have found comfort and laid their head each night. A place where those before us have lived, died, laughed, cried, celebrated and mourned…all while leaving their own unique stamp on the home. From the very personal touches like the pencil-written children’s height chart on the door jam, to eccentric DIY projects like a half bath floor tiled exclusively with pennies, each historic home holds souvenirs from past occupants. I so admire homeowners who preserve those souvenirs and celebrate them with their visitors. It’s these stories that remind us of the past, and others who shared the same four walls before us.

THE START

I experienced my first home tour during a family girl’s weekend in Boston in 2007.  Sixteen of my family members from all over the country came together to re-connect, enjoy each other’s company and walk, tour, taste, sip and experience as much of Boston as possible.  One such event was a historic home tour of South Boston.  As we walked through the beautiful neighborhood, all bundled up from the cold, we felt an immediate sense of warmth each time we stepped into one of the homes on the tour.  The stories the tour volunteers and homeowners told us about the homes, their history, what wars/human/natural disasters they had withstood, the unique people that had occupied the homes, and to see their exquisite beauty, was so memorable!  I remember feeling the warmth, comfort, and character just exuding from these homes.  Each home was more unique than the next!

TOURING MY NEIGHBORHOOD

Now smitten, I returned home looking for home tours in and around my historic community of St. Petersburg, Florida. I am lucky to live in an area that places an emphasis on preservation, therefore I found several historic home tours to frequent each year. I began to appreciate how different historic neighborhoods each had their own unique character; Historic Old Northeast homes are grand and opulent with an underlying cool Florida coastal vibe. Historic Kenwood homes are small, charming and packed with artistic character. I loved that I could admire a home’s décor, even if it wasn’t my own style! I appreciated the history, and the homeowner’s vision. After attending the same local home tours year after year, I decided that there had to be more out there! So, naturally I consulted Google with my request, but I found it very difficult to locate tours in other areas.

PUTTING A PLAN IN MOTION

My day job is in marketing, so I decided to create a place to share these home tours with others. Others like me that love seeing historic homes serve as current, modern-day residences. Others like me who place a value on historic preservation, character and unique design.

So, I hope you find this site helpful! I hope it inspires you to visit a home tour in your neighborhood, or even to round up some friends or family members and plan a trip!

Happy touring!
