What Exactly is a Home Tour?

A home tour is an organized event that allows ticket-holders the opportunity to walk through and experience private homes on specific dates and times. These are homes that are not normally open to the public.

Who Hosts Home Tours?

Home tours are often fundraising events, and are put on by volunteers. These events are typically hosted by neighborhood associations, historic preservation societies, cultural arts associations, and civic societies. Private citizens open up their homes to the public in exchange for ticket sales, which benefit a charitable organization of some kind.

How often are home tours updated on Hot for Home Tours’ website?

We are diligently scanning the web for home tour date announcements and update the website as soon as we learn of new/updated tours. The database is updated at a minimum, every week.

What Kind of Tours are Listed on Hot for Home Tours?

We do our best to only list those home tours that feature private homes. Homes which are not normally open to the public. We do our best to filter out home tours hosted by builders or realtors, that have the primary goal of selling homes. We also do not list tours of museum homes. We focus on tours that feature homes currently lived in by private citizens.

While we certainly have a passion for historic home tours, not all the tours listed on Hot for Home Tours are of historic properties and neighborhoods. There is also a great deal of uniqueness and fun that can be found in other home tours as well! We’ve seen everything from floating home tours, to adobe home tours, to even a home tour of residential chicken coops! You name it, there’s probably a home tour for it!

What Should I Expect on a Home Tour?

It’s best practice to purchase your tickets ahead of time. On the day of the tour, instructions are usually provided as to where to arrive to pickup your ticket and your tour guide/map. Once received, you simply follow the map to the various homes on the tour in whatever order you deem best. Sometimes transportation between homes is provided in the way of trolleys/shuttles. Sometimes it’s a matter of hoofing it between houses. We’ve seen many a creative folk bring bicycles or wagons to help get them and their belongings from house to house. Whatever way you find best, be sure to wear comfortable shoes as there will definitely be plenty of walking and most likely some stairs!
